Helsinki ↔ Saigon: what each city taught the other
Two engineering cultures, three flights apart, and the small set of habits I have started carrying in both directions.
I moved to Helsinki in October 2022. By Christmas I had said kiitos enough times to mean it, and by spring I had started a community for the small but stubborn group of Vietnamese engineers who, like me, had taken a flight north and never quite gone home.
What Helsinki gives Saigon
Patience with a problem. The willingness to spend the first hour reading before writing the first line. Code review as a form of care, not as a tax.
What Saigon gives Helsinki
The instinct to ship before the meeting is over. The willingness to be wrong on a Tuesday so you can be right on a Wednesday. A version of urgency that is not panic, just real interest in finding out whether the thing works.
The trade
Most of my work, in writing and in person, is just the slow exchange of these two habits. I bring patience south and urgency north, and I try to be honest about which one I needed more of myself.
